Dear Library Patrons... Thanks for Your Comments!

Since opening on November 1, 2010, we have been flooded with comments and suggestions! Many of you have told us how much you are enjoying your new library, including the larger spaces, the light, the art, the furnishings and the new collections. We are delighted that you feel welcome, and that all of our years of planning and fundraising have come to such wonderful fruition for our community.

We have also heard from many of you about the frustrations you are feeling. We appreciate that you have taken the time to share your comments and suggestions, and would like to take this opportunity to address some of them.

DVD Shelving

When we planned the shelving for our new library, we recognized the opportunity to try some new approaches and to remedy some of the problems our patrons had encountered with our old shelving. We knew we wanted to provide...

• better access to materials, especially those on the bottom shelves;

• an overall height low enough for most people to see over;

• shelf-ends free of clutter;

• signage that is clear and obvious. 

We also looked for shelving that could highlight our materials and feature the colourful, attractive and informative covers. We considered many types of shelving before making choices, and spent a great deal of time and effort to ensure that our resources in this area were well spent.

In our old location, we tested a range of face-out and spine-out shelving in the library's adult DVD area. Many browsers indicated a preference to see the covers. We have since heard from many borrowers who like the movie-store feel of our new shelves and enjoy seeing the cover art. Other libraries, including the newest branch of Edmonton Public Library, have found face-out display to be successful, and have installed similar DVD shelving.

We appreciate that the new style of shelving in our library does not appeal to everyone. We will certainly keep all comments we receive on file to inform future decisions.
