Choose Your Presentation

All Grade Five teachers in Strathcona County may book Children's Services staff for a fun and informative school visit presentation about the Library's services and programs. Teachers can choose from the following programs:
  • Booktalks and More!: Award winners, Canadian, and staff favorites especially geared to motivate Grade Five readers, and a PowerPoint presentation of library services, collections, and programs.
     
  • “Ready, Set, Research!Homework Help: A live on-line presentation of the best information books, Internet and other online resources available for grade five research assignments.  Includes how to search the Library’s online catalog. 

    Note: To conduct this presentation, Children’s Services staff require that the classroom or school library setting has a computer with Internet access and a projector, set up and ready. 
     
  • Young Reader's Choice Awards: Includes book talks on the current year's junior division nominees, voting information, and the above PowerPoint presentation.

What Does a School Visit Involve?

 

Our one hour Grade Five presentations:

  • Present exciting fiction booktalks that inspire children to read just for fun!
     
  • Encourage students to use both school and public library resources for homework assignments and leisure reading.
     
  • Describe the materials available for borrowing at Strathcona County Library such as fiction and information books, magazines, CD's, DVDs and videos.
     
  • Explain the services available for use in the Library such as reference books, newspapers, the What's For Kids? library website, public Internet access and online databases that are especially good for student research such as World Book Online and the Alberta Learning Online Reference Center.
     
  • Encourage participation in Library programs especially designed for Gr. 5 students.
     
  • Present a variety of information books that can be chosen to supplement the teacher's current teaching unit.
     
  • Introduce Internet resources available through the Library's website and the What's For Kids? page.

Invitations are sent out to schools during the Winter, Spring and Fall program sessions.
