February 2012: Book Arts

I: The History of the Book

When you read a book, you are using one of the most ancient and enduring technologies humankind has ever produced. Have you ever wondered what forces guided its evolution, and why books look and behave the way they do? Join Sarah Mead-Willis, Rare Book Cataloguer at the University of Alberta, on an illustrated journey through the history of the book, and marvel at the beautiful and astonishing creations that mark its richly storied past.

Sun Feb 5 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

II: Handmade Books Today

Members of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild, Alberta North Chapter, will introduce you to some amazing books that are more than just books - they are works of art. Learn about the different structures of handmade books and the techniques used to include text and graphics, illustrated by locally created work. A small exhibit of artists’ books from across Canada will be available for viewing.

Sun Feb 12 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
